Leadership is about being YOU, arguably the most difficult thing to do in the world. When you are YOU you are not pretending to be someone else, you bring yourself to the table, no matter what the situation, what the circumstances, no matter who the people around you, no matter what. This is easier said than done. Most of the time we are afraid of bringing ourselves to the table, we are afraid how someone will perceive us, afraid how family will react to us, afraid how society will act with us. We adapt to people and circumstances around us…

Elections across the world has become very technology driven, there is data collected for every possible permutation and combination of voters and their voting preferences. You can have voting preference data by gender, by age group, by ethnic groups, by location, by dwelling size. There are many many organizations which are collecting such data on a regular basis all across the world and providing it to leaders. These days data is supposed to be the panacea for winning the elections. Relying on data and making strategies based on them seems like an easy way of winning elections. Many armchair politicians…

When I was young I knew of only two career path s— Becoming an engineer or Doctor. That would ensure a satisfactory middle class life, have a scooter / car and a small house in Dehradun and probably have some savings to lead a happy retired life in Dehradun. Of course to be a good engineer you needed to go to IIT and to be a good Doctor AIIMS or similar. Eventually I chose to be an engineer because I was good at Maths and Physics and probably English, what I thought were my talents.

Two things happened simultaneously I…

If you discuss politics with any young working professional, their standard go to response is — please don’t discuss politics, we don’t want to be involved in such discussions. And this is so, in real life, on LinkedIn, on Facebook, on Twitter, any social media platform. People claim to and want to stay away from politics, as it does not concern them. Even in family gatherings and friend gatherings, people want to stay away from politics, as it brings acrimony and destroys peace. In the better interest of the gathering and relations people avoid talking politics.

They are wrong, and…

Microsoft is a risk taking visionary company more than anything else, when it makes bets, it makes big bets and has been doing that long before Jeff Bezos came on the scene and started making them. It has probably taken more risks than other tech companies in the history of tech companies, more than people would care to know or acknowledge.

This may be because it has a history of being an openly aggressive organization (and by extension a bully) in the past because of the image of Steve Ballmer jumping up and down on the stage, when such things…

Some 30 years back I was in love with a person and the entanglement lasted about 2 days and the pain and heartbreak lasted 2 years during which time a lot of alcohol was consumed which created their own famed stories in the campus, Gulzar was read and Ghalib was understood, in addition various other love stories were read, where people pined and died for love. Needless to say this was all pretty much useless and a waste of time, as they did not help in heartbreak and only made matters worst. …

This thing called Corona has been the most disruptive thing that has happened to humanity in the past 50 years, there is no equivalence of this event in the recorded history of the earth. It has laid to bare the faults that existed in us, like the rocks on a river bed visible when the water has all but dried out. …

When I left Microsoft India in 2007, Microsoft’s goal was to make $1 Billion dollars from India, which it achieved one year later in the year 2008. You would think that 12 years down the line the revenue would have at least doubled to $2 Billion, given that 12 years have elapsed and doubling your revenue in 12 years is only achieving a CAGR of 5.94%, even lower than the reported GDP number of India in the same period. How hard can that be?

If you Google Microsoft’s India revenue you will discover to your surprise/shock/amusement that the revenue of…

Have you ever wondered looking at something and wondered how did this actually happen? What were they thinking, what were they doing? No way they could have ended up like this! Times Internet is one such story, every time I look at it all I think is how did they end up like this. How incompetent do you have to be, to be able to use up so much money and such a high brand recognition and end up like this.

Times news publications were a pioneer in digital content that failed to transition to the app world.

Times Group were the digital publishing pioneers in India that created economictimes.com in 1996, timesofindia.com in 1997 and Femina…

CRED is one organization which evokes a lot of emotions from both naysayers and fans, the fans of course think that it is a great ‘product’ and the naysayers always think it is a basket case symptomatic of the clueless venture capitalists operating in India. I am one of the naysayers and I think that if I were an investor I would be happy to deploy the money in businesses which either have a solid revenue model or are building great technology that sooner or later world would need. IMO businesses like Zoom cars is a business which really solves…
